A Clematis Tip

If in doubt whether to prune clematis or not - do nothing. That's what Mother Nature does. These clematis are species or hybrids thereof - and there certainly was not a soul in the wilds to thoughtfully prune these plants when these evolved. Gardening after all, is just common sense.

Small Flowered Clematis

This is our fifth year of offering these and they have been immensely popular and a wonderful combination and companion for the roses.

Clematis

It seems that everybody loves clematis but not everyone has success with these vines. I personally have zero luck with the large flowered varieties in our windblown coastal gardens but the small flowered, less fussy and hardier forms are stellar here.

Alba Luxurians (vitacella)

Large showy white flowers with a touch of green in the centers. Blooms from July through September.
To 10' - $10.00

Emilia Plater (vitacella)

Floriferous, with light blue-violet flowers and darker veining. Flowering from July through October.
To 12' - $10.00

Montana 'Rubens' (Atragene)
Large, fragrant pink (dogwood - like) flowers. Blossoms May and June and grows to be 20' - $10.00

Paul Farges or Summer Snow (Vitalba)
A large and vigorous clematis is on the scale of Paniculata, but earlier blooming (mid summer to mid fall.) The masses of white blossoms are fragrant especially when this clematis is grown in the sun. Grows to be 24' - $10.00

Royal Velours (vitacella)

Free flowering with deep reddish-purple blossoms with paler centers. Blooms June through September.
To 10' - $10.00

Bill Mackenzie (tangutica)

One of my favorites of the very vigorous clematis and a terrific performer. Yellow nodding flowers all season against dense green foliage/growth. Blossoms are followed by 'puffy' seed heads which persist through the winter and are much prized by birds for their nests in the spring.
Very quick to establish to 15' or more - $10.00

Lagoon (macropetala)

'Spidery' violet-blue flowers with paler centers and very profuse early bloom, followed by persistent silky seed heads.
To 15' - $10.00

Paniculata (Terniflora, Maximowwicziana, or simply Sweet Autumn Clematis)

Excellent by any name and always one of the very finest. My absolute favorite and a very vigorous clematis, romps over a driftwood arbor in my gardens and is most joyous in bloom in September. So hardy, so lovely and so divinely fragrant! Masses of small snowy-white flowers on a very dense and tenacious vine that is more than delighted to tackle a tree!
To 20' and probably much more - $10.00

Polish Spirit (vitacella)

One of the most undemanding to grow and a personal favorite, especially nice with once blooming climbing roses. Covered with deep purple blooms from July and well into fall.
To 15' - $10.00

Venosa Violacea (vitacella)

Large flowers heavily veined in purple on a white background. Ample blossoms from June through September.
To 10' - $10.00
